About Me
I stumbled upon photography after first falling in love with travel. Travel has been a significant part of my life since before I even know how to read. I had an eccentric childhood where I moved frequently. I was born in Connecticut, then at 6 months old moved to London, at 2 years old to Florence, Italy, at 6 years old back to the United States to Atlanta, GA, and then at 11 years old back to CT. Travel has been ingrained in me ever since, to the point where I think I feel more comfortable on an airplane and meeting new people than I do living in the same place. After I graduated college from the University of Vermont, I embarked on a three month solo backpacking trip around Europe. It was this trip that ultimately led me to first pick up a professional camera, yet it would not be until later that I decided to pursue photography seriously. I traveled to 12 countries, staying in hostels, and making new friends along the way. I rented a car in Ireland, and taught myself to drive on the left hand side of the road on the Ring of Kerry. I celebrated Festival de Sao Jao in Porto, Portugal, Bastille Day in Paris, and in Prague I celebrated 4th of July with my Canadian hostel friends. My German friend and I took her car all around Buvaria, seeing where she grew up, going to a vineyard, and then ending the journey with Oktoberfest. One day, while on a day trip to Brussels, my phone died while I was exploring the city sights. I had formed such a habit of capturing photos of all the breathtaking places I saw on my phone, that when I passed a camera store, I couldn’t resist the urge to go in and buy my first “real” camera. I had no idea at the time that something that had started as an innocent hobby with my iphone would soon become a passion I’d hope to turn into a career.
When I returned to the US, I moved to New York City to be a Paralegal. I quickly discovered that my wanderlust, creativity, and love for the outdoors were calling out to me, so I decided to move to Los Angeles. I drove cross country, photographing all along the way, and have now brought my total number of US states visited to 33 (woohoo!). The shift away from just being a hobby happened after I went to the Vans US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, CA. I spent hours photographing the surfers, completely immersed and overjoyed. After editing the photos and posting on Instagram, I received such positive feedback and encouragement that I should be pursuing this more seriously.
Ever since, I have made photography a priority and continued to travel, both all around California, and back to Nantucket, Massachusetts on the east coast. In January and February of 2020, I spent 2 months on a photography workshop in Norway and Iceland, and came back inspired to build the website you see here. My favorite photos capture the details of what makes a place unique within its landscape. When in Iceland, I loved how the images turned out when I zoomed in on a glacial cave, a piece of ice, or a dormant volcano. It was amazing to me to see how overtime these unique textures were naturally formed, creating its very own version of art that cannot be found anywhere else. I hope you will peruse around my website and that you find an image that catches your eye. I am always happy to accommodate special order requests, and if you would ever like to hear the story behind an image, please don’t hesitate to ask. I look forward to continuing to share my travels and photographs with you! Thank you!
Warmly,
Emily
